Dr. Jan Powell

Producing Artistic Director


Jan hails from Oregon, where she was founder and Artistic Director of the innovative Tygres Heart Shakespeare Company at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, and received her PhD in Theatre Arts from the University of Oregon. She has served as the Artistic Director of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, and past president of the international Shakespeare Theatre Association. Jan’s artistic credits are extensive; she has produced and directed most of the Shakespearean canon, including all of the histories. For Henley Street Theatre and Richmond Shakespeare, her highly acclaimed recent work includes Sam and Carol: a play where everything is true, Equivocation (co-production with Virginia Repertory Theatre), A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, The Importance of Being Earnest (co-production with Richmond Triangle Players), King John (Richmond Theatre Critics Circle award nomination for Best Director,) an original theatrical adaptation of A Child’s Christmas in Wales, Othello, and Macbeth, for which she won Best Direction from the Richmond Theatre Critics’ Circle. Other notable direction includes Marat/Sade at Theatre 54 and A Comedy of Errors at Looking Glass Theatre in New York City, The Taming of the Shrew for Kingsmen Shakespeare in Los Angeles, and direction for regional theatres across the country including the American Shakespeare Center, the Mendocino Shakespeare Festival, San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, California Shakespeare Festival, Stoneham Theatre in Boston, and Nevada Repertory Theatre. She also has many years of consulting experience in public speaking training and professional development, theater development, and coaching for actors and singers.
